Goldfinches and butterflies in summer gardens capture my attention for a moment. And I linger. Like you, I am posed, gently holding my breath, knowing that within days we will have plunged back into the more hetic September, start-up schedule. School, car pools, projects, evening meetings without end and dinners on the run.
But does it really have to be like that?
God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. Sabbath. Is there enough sabbath in your week, in the routine of your day, in the schedules of your household?
I recently learned that the Chinese word for "busy" is made of two ideograms or picture characters. One is "heart" and the other is "killing".
We all need time away from the rush of practical life to contempleate the timeless truth of God-- that God loves us and wants good for us.
So as you browse this site which is full of wonderful opportunities for growth and study and service, remember to look for the "little Sabbaths" they also offer you. Pick and choose those activities which use your gifts and which strengthen you. Balance your calendar as carefully as you do your checkbook.
It is said that the preacher is always speaking to his or her own self. So, for whom do you think I posted this note?
