VESTRY MEETING

June 21, 2005

           

In Attendance:

Carol Beightol, Joan Brown, Meta Cadugan, Sara Cardinale, Evelyn Costelloe, Canon Shallcross, Jenny Wager, Sally West

Opening Devotions:

Joan Brown led devotions by reading selected passages from the website www.religioustolerance.org , on the history and meaning of the summer solstice and led a prayer of thanksgiving. .

Minutes of the last meeting were corrected to add Sally West in attendance and accepted as presented.

Correspondence:      

A letter from Diocese concerning 2005 financial audits.  See Old Business.

Old Business:

Audit

The 2004 records are ready for audit. Diocese requires all audits to be completed by September 2005, and we are required to have an external audit according to Maggie Watkins, Controller of Diocese.  The external audit will range from $3,000-$7,000 depending on the number of audited accounts according to estimates received.  Separate accounts (Altar Guild, ECW, etc) must have their 2004 statements ready for external audit by September. 

Safeguarding Children

Clergy completed Diocesan training.  Money to purchase the “Safe Guarding Children Program” kit will be donated anonymously for training of Vestry and Board of Nursery School.

Selling Van

An offer of $12,000 was given for the church van from The Scranton Counseling Center, which is a non-profit agency in Scranton. The motion was made by Meta Cadugan and seconded by Evelyn Costelloe to accept the offer.  The second quarter of the van insurance came due.

Delegates for 2005 Convention

Names are needed by July for delegates to Diocesan Convention.

Mutual Ministries Review Committee Report

MMRC report was reviewed by Vestry members indicating overall positive results.  Diversity of responses were shown as the key to St. Margaret parish. Copies of the results will be available for review prior to an open discussion of the MMRC report at the July 19th Vestry meeting. Senior Warden to prepare a “State of the Vestry” mid-year report by August 15 for the September newsletter stating the progress of Vestry initiatives since the annual meeting.

Aspirants: Tom Beightol and Christina Nord

The letter from Jenny Wager, Andy Werner and Canon Shallcross detailed their work with Tom Beightol in discernment was received by the Vestry.  Sally West motioned and Joan Brown seconded the motion to move Tom forward as an aspirant for holy orders to the diocesan Commission on Ministry.   Christina is ready for parish discernment fellowship, graduating from Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.  Christina will be moving to Emmaus to be a resident in Advanced Clinic Pastoral Education at St. Luke’s Hospital.   

Visit with the Archdeacon and Controller

No visit is scheduled with the Archdeacon at this time.

New Business:

New Furnace

One furnace can no longer be repaired and must be replaced.  Price quotes will be sought with the Vestry estimating the cost to be between $3,000 and $5,000. 

Reports on Standing Committees:

Altar Guild – No report

Building and Grounds –New furnace needed, also floors to be waxed and sealed

Christian Education - Clergy attended training on determining and preventing sexual abuse.   An end of year breakfast was held to thank the teachers of the Sunday school.  Christina Nord to contact diocese for ideas.

Communication – Newsletter expansion.  Emphasized the August 15 deadline for the September newsletter very crucial for fall and winter events.  

ECW – Wrapped up Lazy Days of Summer Book Chat – looking to include another book later in the year.  No large projects on the horizon until fall.

Episco “Pals – Date of picnic is July 16th, to be held at the Tillotson’s.

Fund-Raising – Peach Festival with flea market hopefully to be held in August.  Parish dinners later in year a possibility. 

In Reach – Andy Halton to will do S.M.I.L E.S. (St. Margaret’s Inreach Laughing and Eating Society)

Membership Incubator– Top priorities for committee:  Guest Book Procedure, Information Kiosk, Tours of Church, update Birthday List, “You are a member when...” cards, summer desserts in homes,  June meeting rescheduled for July 14th or July 18th.

Memorials – no report

Outreach – MMRC to continue.

R & E – working towards Heritage Days’ Root Beer Float stand on July 23, looking for people to staff the booths.

SMNS – Annual Spring Fling ended school year on positive note.  Two staff members resigned, hiring new staff members will depend on the number of enrolled students.  The Nursery School is in need of Grandmother Helpers. “Safe Guarding Children Program” training for all staff and volunteers.

Stewardship - Rector attending national stewardship conference for diocese in North Carolina from June 23-June 26th. Consecration Sunday is planned for the fall of 2005. Next meeting July 19th.

 

Youth – No Report

Worship Committee –next meeting dates are July 25 after worship and August 24 after worship. 

Next Meeting:  Tuesday, July 19th at  Chaplin: Sara Cardinale
